Research in the Department of Biology covers the entire spectrum of modern Biology, from Integrative Biology and Wetland Ecology to Functional Genomics and Neurobiology, from Theoretical Population Genetics to Applied Infectious Disease and Cancer Research. The research excellence of Biology faculty is reflected by the awards of multiple Canada Research Chairs, a well as many New Opportunities/Leaders Oppourtunity awards from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund, and Operating funds from the Canadian Cancer Society, CIHR, Genome Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and NSERC. Collaborations in the Department led to new and innovative projects, and they are instrumental for the McMaster-wide Centres for McMaster Centre for Climate Change, the Centre for Environmental Genomics. Six core areas of research strength of the Department have been identified. Collaborative interactions led to the inclusion of several faculty members in more than one core group.
